Meralco brings EASL action and hope to Cebu in charity game for Typhoon Tino victims

Basketball will take on a deeper meaning in Cebu this week. When the Meralco Bolts host the debuting Macau Black Bears on November 15, the East Asia Super League (EASL) won’t just be bringing elite regional hoops to the Queen City of the South — it will also be rallying for a cause that hits close to home.

All proceeds from the game at the newly refurbished Cebu Coliseum will go directly to victims of Typhoon Tino, which recently devastated several parts of the province, particularly Barangay Guadalupe.

The EASL described the initiative as a “purpose beyond basketball,” with the league emphasizing through its social media posts:

“Every ticket will help rebuild the lives of those affected and fuel Cebu to recovery.”

The matchup also marks the EASL’s return to Cebu after a successful hosting of its inaugural Final Four in 2024 in Lapu-Lapu City, where Japan’s Chiba Jets defeated Korea’s Seoul SK Knights for the championship.

For Meralco, it’s another opportunity to build momentum after finally cracking the win column with an 85-76 victory over the Taoyuan Pilots in Ilagan, Isabela.

The Bolts’ new reinforcements — Asian import Sina Vahedi and naturalized player Ange Kouame — made solid debuts in that breakthrough victory, helping the team improve to a 1-2 record.

As the Bolts bring their campaign to Cebu, they’ll also be bringing hope to those rebuilding their lives. For one night, basketball will once again prove that its greatest assists happen off the  court.
