The Memphis Grizzlies have been dealt a blow ahead of the upcoming 2025–26 National Basketball Association (NBA) season, as center Zach Edey will miss the start of the campaign due to injury.

According to NBA insider and ESPN’s Shams Charania, Edey is set to miss the beginning of the 2025–26 season to undergo surgery to repair a left ankle he reinjured during an offseason training session.

“Memphis Grizzlies All-Rookie center Zach Edey re-sprained his left ankle in an offseason workout this week and will undergo surgery to re-stabilize the ankle. Edey will likely miss the beginning of the 2025–26 season,” Charania wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

It should be noted that the 23-year-old has a history of ankle injuries, with the first occurring in November 2024. The issue resurfaced in March and again in April 2025.

Selected ninth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2024 NBA Draft, Edey is widely regarded as a future star. He had an impressive debut season, averaging 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 58 percent from the field and starting 55 of 66 games.

The Grizzlies had a mixed 2024–25 NBA campaign, finishing eighth in the Western Conference with a 48–34 record. They defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament but were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs.
