Manny Pacquiao aiming to break his own boxing record at the age of 47

Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao made a dramatic return to the ring on July 19, proving that age is just a number. At 46 years old, Pacquiao faced off against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, with their 12-round clash ending in a controversial majority draw.

Two judges scored the bout evenly at 114–114, while a third edged it to Barrios at 115–113, allowing the Mexican-American champion to retain his title and move to 29-2-2 (18 KOs). Pacquiao, meanwhile, now holds a professional record of 62-8-3.

Despite the lack of a win, Pacquiao’s camp remains optimistic. Reports indicate the boxing icon could soon get another shot at a world title—possibly against WBA titleholder Rolly Romero.

Pacquiao’s most recent victory came back in 2019, when he stunned Keith Thurman to claim the WBA welterweight title, becoming the oldest fighter in history to win a welterweight crown at age 40.

Now, with his sights set on breaking his own record, Pacquiao is looking to return to the top of the division at age 47. According to MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons, the mission is clear.

“The goal is still the same,” said Gibbons in an interview with World Boxing News. “The goal remains: to break his own record, to make history, to win a welterweight title. He wants to be the oldest person to do it at 47 years old. Rolly Romero has the WBA belt, so he is the target.”

Even if Pacquiao defeats Romero, the overall record for oldest world champion in boxing history would remain untouched. That milestone belongs to Bernard Hopkins, who was 49 when he captured the WBA and IBA light heavyweight titles in 2014 with a split decision win over Beibut Shumenov.

Romero, for his part, has welcomed the idea of facing Pacquiao, expressing interest in what would be a career-defining fight.

“A Hall of Famer like Manny Pacquiao on my résumé? Who wouldn’t want that? That’s the easiest way to get into the Hall of Fame, right?” Romero said in a recent Boxing News interview.

While both camps are reportedly eager to make the fight happen, no official date has been set. However, Gibbons reiterated that Pacquiao is motivated to return to the ring before the end of 2025, keeping fans on edge as the sport’s only eight-division world champion chases yet another milestone.
