Majoy Baron and Mika Reyes lead PVL’s block party as PLDT rises in PVL

The PLDT High Speed Hitters have become one of the Premier Volleyball League’s toughest defensive teams early in the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference, and a big reason for that has been the imposing presence of middle blockers Mary Joy Baron and Mika Reyes.

According to the league’s Best Blockers chart, Baron tops the list with 15 total blocks and a 0.88 average per set, while Reyes trails closely in second with 14 blocks and a 0.82 set average—making them the top two shot-stoppers in the conference.

Their impact goes beyond raw numbers. In PLDT’s straight-set win over the ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles, the Hitters not only brushed aside their opponents offensively but also frustrated attacks at the net, helping secure a decisive 25-23, 25-23, 25-13 victory and reaffirming their place near the top of the standings.

Earlier in the conference, Baron and Reyes helped PLDT maintain a dominant front against Akari in a four-set triumph, with Baron’s 14 points and Reyes’ contributions helping tamp down the Chargers’ offense.

Their net presence consistently alters the way opponents attack, forcing hitters to change angles, reset their timing, or kick the ball out for easier options.

Defense at the net has complemented PLDT’s offensive weapons, such as Savi Davison and Kianna Dy, who have provided scoring punch when needed. Head coach Rald Ricafort has stressed that while standings matter, defensive discipline and continuous improvement remain team priorities as the season progresses.

Baron’s and Reyes’ experience also contributes to locker room leadership. Both players have been recognized in past seasons—Baron as one of the league’s top middle blockers and Reyes with historical awards and Finals-level performances—adding intangible value in tight moments.

With PLDT holding a strong record and controlling many net exchanges, Baron and Reyes have emerged not just as statistical leaders but as backbones of a defense that could carry the High Speed Hitters deep into the latter stages of the conference.
