Maddie Madayag makes history again, sets PVL history with 10 blocks to claim both UAAP and PVL records

Even in defeat, Maddie Madayag found a way to make history.

Under the bright lights of the Candon City Arena, the Choco Mucho middle blocker turned a tough night into a memorable one, putting up 10 monster blocks in a 20–25, 22–25, 26–24, 19–25 loss to ZUS Coffee on Saturday — a feat that instantly etched her name in the PVL record books.

The 5-foot-11 tower of strength matched the single-game blocking record first set by Riri Meneses for Petro Gazz back in 2021, and in doing so, took the solo lead in the Best Blocker race of the 2025 Reinforced Conference with 1.19 blocks per set (25 total) and counting.

But what made the moment more special was how it mirrored her own journey — one built on resilience, patience, and consistency.

Despite being a middle blocker, Madayag continues to lead all local scorers for Choco Mucho with 57 points (9.5 per game), just a few shy of American import Marlee Smith. It’s a testament to her all-around impact and her steady evolution from collegiate star to professional anchor.

And for those who have followed her career closely, this performance feels like déjà vu. Madayag once shattered the UAAP single-game record with an 11-block explosion in Season 81, carrying Ateneo to a five-set comeback over UST.

That game broke an 11-year-old mark previously held by La Salle’s Celine Hernandez, and it cemented Madayag’s legacy as a defensive force like no other.

Saturday’s duel with ZUS Coffee was also historic for another reason — both teams combined for a staggering 33 total blocks, proof of the sheer quality of play at the net.

While Madayag commanded the spotlight with 10, the Thunderbelles’ rising rookie Riza Nogales wasn’t far behind. The six-foot, 22-year-old middle blocker unleashed seven blocks in an 11-point performance — the highest single-game blocking output by a PVL rookie so far.

Both Madayag and Nogales share more than a position and a knack for timing — they share a story of comeback and courage, having both battled major injuries early in their careers. Now, they stand on opposite sides of the court, but perhaps in the same lineage — defenders who turn walls into milestones.
