LeBron James announces ‘second decision’, boosting retirement talks from fans

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has put the basketball world in a frenzy after teasing a big announcement called “The Second Decision” on his social media on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

James’ retirement has been on everyone’s minds for a while now, despite the four-time champion exercising his $52.6 million player option in the offseason to return for his 23rd season and hopefully secure a championship with the now-loaded Lakers.

The announcement is expected to be made on Wednesday at 12:00 a.m. (PH time).

The announcement’s video shows James preparing to sit in front of a reporter like his original announcement in 2010, when he announced live on ESPN his decision to join the Miami Heat and form a big three with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

The 2010 ‘Decision’ had massive implications on the free agency landscape, paving the way for players to have more freedom in how they announce their high-profile signings.

James, who is 40 years old, still averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds to finish sixth in the MVP voting and make it into the All-NBA second team.

Retirement or bluff?

Fans have already speculated on what the announcement could be, with others believing that it would be for the veteran to finally announce his retirement in his upcoming 2025-2026 season, while others strongly suggest that this could be a massive marketing scheme.

While NBA insider Brett Siegel calls the announcement a social media ploy for James and media distributor Amazon’s partnership on Amazon Day.
