LeBron James’ agent opens up about the uncertainty surrounding his Los Angeles Lakers future

The National Basketball Association (NBA) all-time leading scorer LeBron James has remained relatively quiet about his future with the Los Angeles Lakers following the conclusion of their 2024-25 season.

James has yet to decide whether he will exercise his player option with the Lakers for the 2025-26 season. The 40-year-old currently has the option to return to the court for his 23rd season, which would allow him to break the record he currently shares with NBA legend Vince Carter.

However, uncertainty remains over his future as he continues to recover from a Grade 2 MCL knee injury sustained during Game 5 of the Lakers’ playoff loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round. As it stands, James can either play out his contract, opt out, or sign an extension.

James’ long-time agent and Klutch Sports CEO, Rich Paul, appeared on The Rich Eisen Show on Thursday, May 22, where he spoke about the Lakers icon’s future.

“I think everybody has been on pins and needles for a while. I don’t know about that though. I wish I had the answer. I don’t know. It’s early. I don’t have conversations like that. I go into each year like he is continuing to play. I never even talk about that,” Paul stated.

Despite being 40, James continued to perform at an elite level during the 2024-25 season, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, easily emerging as the Lakers’ best player. However, concerns remain over the superstar’s fitness as he approaches 41 in December, although his experience and skills keep him a formidable competitor.

“I always get asked this question. Physically, he can play several more years. I don’t think it’s the physical aspect of it. I think it’s where you’re at mentally. With all these guys, I think we put so much on the individual. There are a lot of layers to success as an individual. And I think when you think about him, there are a lot of decisions that have to be made. You know, going into a locker room, what the roster looks like, what the approach of each player is. He’s always going to get everybody’s best shot, and so will the team he’s on, considering the history of the team,” he added.

It is understood that the addition of Luka Doncic could factor into James’ decision regarding his future with the franchise. The Slovenian will be eligible for a four-year, $229 million contract extension with the Lakers in August, and it will be interesting to see what LeBron decides.
