Kevin Durant fires subtle shot at Stephen Curry, reigniting tensions with Warriors fans on X

Kevin Durant has never been one to hold back when engaging with fans online, and his latest exchange on X (formerly Twitter) was no exception. While answering questions from followers, Durant appeared to take a subtle swipe at former teammate Stephen Curry.

When a fan asked why he thinks Warriors fans dislike him, Durant’s response seemed aimed at Curry’s loyal supporters.

“Them finals MVPs, they will never recover,” Durant said.

The remark quickly stirred debate. Some fans interpreted it as a sly jab at Curry, while others argued that it wasn’t directed at the entire Warriors fanbase — only a group of die-hard Curry loyalists who still believe Durant took the Finals MVP honors from their star player.

This sentiment traces back to one of the longest-running debates in NBA circles: Curry’s legacy always felt incomplete until he finally captured the 2022 NBA Finals MVP, despite already having three championships to his name.

Golden State’s title runs in 2015, 2017, and 2018 saw Andre Iguodala claim the Finals MVP in 2015, while Durant earned back-to-back honors in 2017 and 2018.

In the 2017 Finals, Durant delivered a spectacular performance, averaging 35.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.4 assists while shooting 55.6% from the field and 47.4% from three. Curry, in comparison, averaged 26.8 points, 9.4 assists, and 8.0 rebounds, shooting 44% overall and 38.8% from deep.

The following year, Durant posted 28.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game on 52.6% shooting, including 40.9% from beyond the arc, as the Warriors swept Cleveland. Curry averaged 27.5 points, 6.8 assists, and 6.0 rebounds, shooting 40.2% from the field and 41.5% from three.

Across both Finals runs, Durant’s dominance was clear, outperforming Curry in nearly every major category and justifying his consecutive Finals MVP wins. Still, with Curry missing out on the award in four straight Finals appearances from 2015 to 2018, many of his fans unfairly placed the blame on Durant.

While the two superstars have mutual respect, those lingering fan sentiments may have contributed to Durant’s eventual departure from Golden State.

According to NBA insider Marc Spears, Warriors fans regularly chanted “MVP” for Curry — something Durant reportedly didn’t appreciate during his later days with the team. Spears hinted that these chants left Durant feeling as though he was never fully embraced by the fanbase.
