Karl Eldrew Yulo misses podium in FIG World Cup Croatia leg as fatigue slows rising gymnast

The grind of the FIG World Cup series proved unforgiving for Karl Eldrew Yulo, who missed out on podium finishes in both the floor exercise and horizontal bar at the Croatia leg held in Osijek.

Hampered by a foot issue and visible fatigue, the 18-year-old placed seventh in the floor exercise with a score of 13.600.

The event was ruled by Artem Dolgopyat, the former Olympic gold medalist, who topped the field with 14.500. He was followed by Harry Hepworth with 14.433 and Noam Berkovich with 14.000.

The packed competition schedule appeared to take its toll on Yulo, who has been one of the busiest athletes in the circuit.

In just a span of weeks, he competed across four World Cup legs—highlighted by a gold medal in Antalya, Turkey, and two bronze finishes in Cairo, Egypt less than a week prior to Osijek.

The challenge continued in the horizontal bar, where Yulo placed eighth in the final with a score of 13.366 after registering 13.733 in the qualifiers. Tang Chia-Hung dominated the apparatus with a 15.233, while Milad Karimi (14.933) and Angel Barajas (14.833) completed the podium.

Still, Osijek was less a setback and more a reflection of the demands placed on a rising athlete navigating the senior international stage.

For Yulo, simply reaching both finals again—just as he did in Baku and Cairo—reinforced his growing consistency against a deep global field.

What stands out in this stretch is not just the medals he has collected, but the pace at which he is adapting.

Transitioning from breakthrough performances to sustaining them week after week is a different challenge altogether, and Yulo is now experiencing that reality firsthand. Each leg has tested a different aspect of his game—execution, endurance, and recovery.

More importantly, this phase signals a crucial learning curve. With the pressure of expectations steadily rising, Yulo is building the kind of resilience that cannot be taught in training alone.

The missed podium in Osijek may sting, but it also adds to a body of experience that is shaping him into a more complete competitor.

As the World Cup series pushes forward, the focus for Yulo shifts from chasing finishes to managing form and longevity.

His early gold in Antalya and double bronzes in Cairo have already proven his capability—now, it becomes a matter of sustaining that level while navigating the physical and mental toll of elite competition.
