June Mar Fajardo admits that San Miguel needs to win its final game of the Philippine Cup

The San Miguel Beermen have enjoyed an impressive Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup campaign, as evidenced by their 7–3 win-loss record, placing them second in the standings.

However, San Miguel suffered a shock 97–100 defeat to the Converge FiberXers in their penultimate elimination round game on Wednesday, June 11, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Despite record eight-time PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) June Mar Fajardo posting a double-double of 17 points and 23 rebounds, Converge’s collective effort—led by Schonny Winston, Justine Baltazar, and Justin Arana—proved too much for the Beermen.

San Miguel had the opportunity to secure a twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs with a win over Converge, but they failed to capitalize, putting pressure on their final elimination game. A loss could cause the Beermen to drop to the middle of the standings, complicating their playoff path.

“We need that next game because if we lose, we’re going to get stuck in the middle of the standings. We really need to win that last game. It’s not just because of those two (Justine Baltazar and Justin Arana). It was also because of Winston. Their team effort and ball movement were just really nice,” Fajardo said in a press conference.

San Miguel will face NorthPort on Sunday, June 15, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. While Batang Pier sit in the lower half of the Philippine Cup standings, they enter their final game with momentum, having stunned top-seeded NLEX Road Warriors, 113–108, in their previous outing on Wednesday, June 11.

It remains to be seen whether San Miguel can capitalize on the consistent brilliance of Fajardo and close out their group stage campaign with a crucial win.
