Jonathan Kuminga, Warriors end stalemate with two-year deal

Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors have finally agreed to terms on an extension after a months-long stalemate, according to Shams Charania.

Kuminga agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million deal, with a team option in the second year, giving flexibility for Golden State on trade options or a possible extension once the contract ends. Kuminga will also waive his no-trade clause.

The deal comes after Seth Curry came on board to team up with his brother, Steph, for the first time, as well as veteran center Al Horford, who also inked a two-year deal.

Both parties have gone back and forth the whole offseason, with the forward reportedly recently declining a three-year deal with $75.2 million, with a team option in the last year. Reports have said that Kuminga’s camp demanded numbers closer to $30 million a year with a player option, with the Warriors rejecting these demands.

Sign-and-trade proposals from the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns also emerged, but both Kuminga and Golden State declined.

The 22-year-old’s salary is now the fourth-highest on the Warriors’ payroll for next season as the team’s luxury tax increases by $70-80 million.

Golden State still has the flexibility to sign multiple players on a veteran’s minimum deal with its $5.7 million taxpayer midlevel exception.

Drafted 7th overall in the 2021 Draft, Kuminga has spent his entire NBA career with the franchise and won a championship as a rookie in 2022. Last season, he averaged 15.3 points, 2.2 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game.
