Jonas Magpantay completes Cinderella run in Qatar 10-ball World Cup

Filipino underdog Jonas Magpantay completed an improbable run at the 2025 Qatar 10-ball World Cup at the Ezdan Palace Hotel in Doha on Sunday, Nov. 2.

Magpantay upset Polish Szymon Kural, 13-9, in the finals after clawing back from Stage 1. With the win, Magpantay was awarded the $100,000 championship cash prize.

“I feel great, I can breathe now. I mean, even myself couldn’t believe that I could beat him (Kural) but I did,” Magpantay said post-match.

“It means a lot to me because this is the first time I joined here in Qatar, nobody knows me so I feel great, I just want to play my game. To all my family and supporters, thank you so much. It’s a big thing for me that you guys were still there,” he added

The Mindoro Oriental native dominated the match with his safeties. He gained the momentum early to get within two of the championship, 11-6.

Kural then tried to mount a comeback following three consecutive racks to get within two of the Filipino, 11-9, before a dry break allowed Magpantay to get on the hill after a runout.

The final ruck turned into a safety battle until Magpantay grabbed the championship after the Polish missed a jump cue, 13-9.

The Filipino outlasted world championship contender Moritza Neuhausen in the semifinals, setting up the championship match.

Magpantay also stunned fellow Filipino and world champion Carlo Biado en route to the championship.
