The Creamline Cool Smashers reminded everyone why they remain the Premier Volleyball League’s (PVL) most feared contenders, sweeping the Farm Fresh Foxies, 25-19, 25-19, 26-24, in the quarterfinals of the PVL On Tour preseason tournament on Saturday, August 9, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Setter Kyle Negrito orchestrated the win with 21 excellent sets, six points, and an impressive five aces to earn Best Player of the Game honors. Veteran hitter Michele Gumabao powered the offense with 15 points, while team captain Alyssa Valdez and Jema Galanza chipped in 12 and 10 markers, respectively.
Despite an uncharacteristically slow 3-2 finish in the pool stage, Creamline is finding form at the right moment.
“Our past losses or mistakes are just part of the game—there are always errors,” said Galanza. “What’s important is that we’re fixing them. We think our game is better now, and we hope to bring that same level to the semifinals.”
She also echoed coach Sherwin Meneses’ reminder that every PVL squad has leveled up this season.
“All teams are improving, so we need to focus on our own game,” she added.
For Farm Fresh, Trisha Tubu led the charge with 20 points, while veteran Rachel Daquis contributed in a spirited third set. However, Creamline’s defense proved decisive, shutting down the Foxies’ late rally.
Valdez acknowledged the importance of a recent break after the grueling tour schedule.
“The semifinals are happening back-to-back, and hopefully the Finals after that, so the 19-day break was really important. We had some sickness, and of course you can’t avoid aches and pains since the games on the tour were so close together,” she said.
Statistically, Creamline edged Farm Fresh in attacks, 38-35, and matched them in blocks with four apiece. The biggest difference came from the service line, where Negrito’s leadership helped the Cool Smashers rack up 10 aces—more than double the Foxies’ four.
With the win, Creamline advances to face the unbeaten PLDT High Speed Hitters in the semifinals on Tuesday, August 12, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
