Jayson Vayson fails to capture world titles after controversial stoppage

Filipino boxer Jayson Vayson failed in his quest for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) Strawweight titles after a controversial stoppage from his corner against Oscar Collazo on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The fight was still competitive in the seventh round when Vayson’s corner suddenly threw in the towel, awarding Collazo his 13th win in as many fights and his third consecutive stoppage.

Vayson was in trouble in the sixth round, but maintained his aggressiveness in the seventh before the stoppage. Vayson later remarked that he still wanted to keep going but respected his corner’s surprising decision to stop the fight.

“I was shocked that they stopped the fight because I felt that I could still continue fighting,” Vayson said in Filipino. “Of course, I respect the corner’s decision for the safety of the boxer. … I felt the punches in my body, but I thought I could manage it.”

The judges had scored it 59-54 for Collazo heading into the seventh, but the fight was still competitive as Vayson continuously traded punches with the champion.

Vayson’s trainer, Allan Alegria, defended the call post-fight, saying that it was for “safety reasons” after noticing his fighter’s slower momentum.

“I was thinking about his safety. He slowed down the last two rounds and I don’t want it to come to a point where he’d get badly hurt. He was moving differently and his legs were shaky,” Alegria explained.

Vayson had moments in the early rounds but lost momentum until the stoppage in the seventh.

The Filipino dropped to a 14-2 record, while Collazo remained undefeated in 13 fights with 10 stoppages. 

A rematch with another Filipino boxer in Melvin Jerusalem is likely for Collazo, who is on a journey to become the undisputed Strawweight king.
