Jason Kidd staying in Dallas: Mavericks sign head coach to multi-year extension

The Dallas Mavericks have secured the future of head coach Jason Kidd, signing the Hall of Famer to a multi-year contract extension. While the terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the move comes after strong interest from the New York Knicks, who ultimately hired Mike Brown following Dallas’ refusal to grant permission to interview Kidd earlier this offseason.

Kidd, 52, has served as the Mavericks’ head coach for the past four seasons, compiling a 179-149 record. Under his leadership, Dallas reached the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and made a deep run to the NBA Finals in 2024.

Before his current stint in Dallas, Kidd was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers for two seasons and previously held head coaching roles with the Milwaukee Bucks (139-152) and Brooklyn Nets, where he posted a 44-38 record in his debut 2013-14 season.

A 10-time NBA All-Star and 2011 NBA champion as a player, Kidd faces a major challenge heading into the 2025-26 season. The Mavericks are looking to bounce back after a turbulent 2024-25 campaign, finishing with a 39-43 record and missing the playoffs following a decisive loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Compounding their struggles, the franchise lost superstar Luka Dončić in a shocking trade to the Lakers. Although the Mavericks received Anthony Davis in return, the All-Star forward suffered an injury in his debut. Adding to their woes, Kyrie Irving sustained a season-ending ACL injury late in the year.

However, there is optimism in Dallas. The Mavericks landed top prospect Cooper Flagg in the NBA Draft and bolstered their roster with veteran guard D’Angelo Russell in free agency. Once healthy, Irving will return to a lineup that also features Davis, rising big men Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford, as well as sharpshooters Klay Thompson and Max Christie.

With a revamped core and a seasoned head coach at the helm, the Mavericks are poised to re-establish themselves as contenders in the Western Conference.
