“It is my dream to come back’: Greg Slaughter makes humble statement for PBA return

After years away from the PBA, Greg Slaughter has released a statement announcing his desire to come back to the league.

Slaughter last played for the now-defunct Northport Batang Pier in 2021, and has been playing in the league’s rivals, MPBL, for the Basilan Starhorse.

In a statement released to reporters, Slaughter said he has started a new “season” in his life and apologized for the issues he caused to the league, which has reportedly hindered the 7-foot big man from returning to the league.

“I approached this new season in my life with humility – the humility to recognized what I did wrong, the and humility to offer my profound apologies for miscommunications in the past that caused offense to an association that has been so good to me, an association that has made my dream of playing for a Filipino premier league come true,” Slaughter said.

“It is my dream to come back, and it is my dream for my family to see me proud of playing in the home court. I want my wife and children to watch me play basketball in the PBA again,” he added.

Slaughter mentioned Barangay Ginebra San Miguel team manager and SMC director Alfrancis Chua and thanked him for drafting him in 2013.

“I would specifically like to mention Mr. Alfrancis Chua, the person responsible for getting me to play for Ginebra, a person I owe so much to. My profound gratitude to you, Sir.,” said Slaughter.

The former Ateneo standout was drafted first overall by Ginebra in the 2013 draft, before bagging four championships with the team as well as several individual awards, including five All-Star nods.

In 2021, a misunderstanding with the Gin Kings’ front office led to Ginebra dealing Slaughter to Northport in a blockbuster deal for Christian Standhardinger.

Talks of a comeback between the Titan Ultra Giant Risers, who hold the center’s playing rights from their takeover of Northport, and Slaughter happened recently but stalled due to reportedly high bonus demands.

The 37-year-old admitted that he misses playing in the PBA and in front of what he called the “best” fans in the world.

“I’ve missed it very much. I missed playing for the fans and competing in the top-level basketball league in the Philippines,” he said.

“I am Fil-Am, but I have never felt more Filipino than when playing for the PBA. I’ve played elsewhere, but nothing compares to playing for Filipino fans. They are the best in the world. Iba pa rin ang puso ng Pinoy,” added the former Ginebra center.

For Slaughter, returning to the league isn’t just for him, but for his children, whom he owes his basketball legacy to.

“I want my three daughters to be proud of their father. I want them to grow up seeing me beam with pride in the PBA. To have a father who plays for the PBA is a legacy I want for my children,” he said.
