“It comes from the work I put in”: Juan Gomez de Liaño after notching second triple-double in three games

The Converge FiberXers continued their strong start to the 2025 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Wednesday, October 22, with a convincing 125–108 victory over the Terrafirma Dyip at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Central to Converge’s early-season success has been the sensational play of rookie guard Juan Gomez de Liaño, who is rapidly proving why he was selected second overall in the 2025 PBA Rookie Draft.

The former UP Fighting Maroons standout made headlines in his debut game after recording a historic triple-double in a 129–92 win over the Titan Ultra Giants, becoming the first rookie since Scottie Thompson in 2016 to achieve the feat in his PBA debut. The performance earned him PBA Press Corps Player of the Week honors for October 5–12 — the first recipient of the award this season.

De Liaño carried that momentum into the matchup against Terrafirma, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists — his second triple-double in just three professional games. The 24-year-old credited the team’s trust and his daily work ethic for his strong performances.

“It comes from the work I put in every day,” said De Liaño. “Props and credits to the team and coaching staff for all the trust. They believe in me, and I’m just really grateful to be in this situation right now.”

He also noted the team’s growing chemistry following recent roster additions.

“We added more firepower off the bench with the three new players, and I’m just happy we came out with the win. The team did a good job, but there were some lapses in our defensive schemes that we have to work on going into Saturday’s game,” he added.

De Liaño’s all-around brilliance was complemented by Alec Stockton, who chipped in 22 points, five assists, four steals, three rebounds, and a block. MJ Garcia scored 15, Schonny Winston added 14, while big men Justin Arana and Justine Baltazar both registered double-doubles to anchor the frontcourt.

The victory lifted Converge to fourth place in the Philippine Cup standings with a 2–1 record. The FiberXers will look to sustain their momentum when they take on the Phoenix Fuel Masters on Saturday, October 25, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
