Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) powerhouse Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has continued to show faith in Filipino basketball star Isaac Go after agreeing to a one-year contract extension with the player.

This is a bold move by the Ginebra management, considering Go spent most of the ongoing PBA season on the sidelines due to a knee injury. The Titan Management Group, which represents Go, made the announcement on Saturday, August 2.

Barangay Ginebra shocked Filipino basketball fans by trading Christian Standhardinger, Stanley Pringle, and a 2023 first-round pick to Terrafirma Dyip in exchange for Isaac Go, Stephen Go, and another 2023 first-round pick. The blockbuster trade also involved a swap of first-round selections in the PBA Rookie Draft held in July, where Ginebra selected RJ Abarrientos with the third overall pick, while Terrafirma took Mark Nonoy at 10th overall.

However, the 29-year-old Go made only seven appearances for his new team in the Governors’ Cup, after injuring his knee on September 13, 2024, while defending Felix Lemetti of Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on a three-point attempt. In those seven games, Go averaged just 3.1 points and 2.3 rebounds, struggling to make an impact before sustaining the serious injury.

Despite this, Barangay Ginebra’s front office acted swiftly to retain Go, aiming to reinforce their frontcourt depth after the unexpected departure of Jamie Malonzo. Malonzo left the franchise in a surprise move on Thursday, July 31, signing with B.League club Kyoto Hannaryz in Japan.

Go, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 PBA Draft by Terrafirma Dyip, has yet to leave a significant mark in the league. However, he remains highly regarded for his collegiate success in the UAAP, where he led Ateneo de Manila University to three UAAP championships and also won two PCCL (Philippine Collegiate Champions League) titles.

The forward is currently undergoing rehab and is aiming for a comeback ahead of next season. With Malonzo’s exit creating a gap in Ginebra’s rotation, Go now has a renewed opportunity to compete for a spot in the team’s starting lineup.
