Import-less Cignal ends PLDT’s 15-game win streak in three-set sweep

In a stunning display of grit and chemistry, the Cignal HD Spikers — playing without an import — pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2025 PVL Reinforced Conference, sweeping powerhouse PLDT High Speed Hitters, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21, on Tuesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

What made the victory even more remarkable was the timing: just hours after confirming the departure of their Greek import, Eva Chantava, Cignal’s all-Filipino lineup banded together to hand the defending champions their first loss in 16 matches — abruptly halting PLDT’s historic unbeaten streak that stretched across multiple conferences.

From the opening serve, it was clear the HD Spikers came with something to prove. Setter Gel Cayuna orchestrated a near-flawless offense with 20 excellent sets while chipping in six points, dictating the tempo and exploiting the gaps in PLDT’s floor defense.

Former PLDT wing Erika Santos led the charge with a breakout 17-point performance built on sheer aggression at the net. Once a reserve in the champions’ rotation, Santos came full circle by torching her old team with relentless attacks and poise, marking her best outing of the conference after two quiet games.

Ishie Lalongisip added a near triple-double with 15 points, 11 receptions, and eight digs, while middle blockers Roselyn Doria and Jackie Acuna anchored Cignal’s net defense, limiting PLDT’s usually lethal offense to just sporadic bursts.

For PLDT, the night was one to forget. Reigning Invitational MVP Savi Davison struggled to find her rhythm, managing just 14 points — her lowest output this conference — though she still contributed nine receptions and seven digs.

Russian reinforcement Anastasiia Bavykina added 10 points and 10 receptions, while Kianna Dy chipped in seven markers.

Despite flashes of their trademark composure, the High Speed Hitters never found the spark that carried them through their 15-match winning tear. Cignal, on the other hand, dominated the energy and execution, building double-digit leads that PLDT could never erase.

The win not only lifted the HD Spikers to 2-1 but also injected fresh drama into the Reinforced Conference standings. Their upset over PLDT reminded everyone that in volleyball, heart and chemistry can outshine raw firepower — even against champions.

As Cignal looks to sustain this momentum, PLDT faces the unfamiliar task of rebounding from a loss — and proving their dynasty still has fuel left.
