The Titan Ultra Giants made an electrifying debut in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), edging the Meralco Bolts, 100-96, in their Philippine Cup opener on Wednesday, October 8, at the Ynares Center.
Veteran forward Calvin Abueva led the charge with a career-high 41 points, including a dominant 16-point explosion in the third quarter. The 37-year-old, known as “The Beast,” showed he still has plenty left in the tank in his first outing with the league newcomers.
“I still have more to give,” said Abueva after the game. “We really pushed ourselves, especially me. I need to push even harder now, especially playing alongside younger guys. It turned out I gave more effort than them.”

Supporting Abueva’s monster night was reigning Most Improved Player Joshua Munzon, who delivered a solid all-around performance with 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Cade Flores added 10 points and six rebounds, while Fran Yu flirted with a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine assists.
Head coach Johnedel Cardel, returning to the PBA after his previous stint with Terrafirma Dyip, praised Abueva’s impact and leadership.
“We took advantage of Calvin,” said Cardel. “Everyone knows how strong he is and how much heart he plays with. That’s why he’s ‘The Beast.’”
The victory marks a strong start for Titan Ultra in their inaugural PBA campaign, signaling their intent to be more than just a feel-good expansion story.
The Giants look to keep their momentum going when they face the Converge FiberXers on Saturday, October 11, at Montalban.
