The Magnolia Hotshots have locked in a key part of their future with rising star Zavier Lucero signing a two-year contract extension—just in time for the start of the PBA’s historic 50th season.
Lucero, who emerged as one of the breakout performers in the recent Philippine Cup, reportedly attracted interest from teams in the Korean Basketball League (KBL). However, the 25-year-old forward ultimately chose to stay with Magnolia following productive discussions with newly appointed head coach and PBA legend LA Tenorio, who takes the reins in his first head coaching role.
“What I said the whole time throughout my negotiations is that the Philippines is where I want to be. I found a home here. I feel at home here,” Lucero said during the PBA Media Day held at the Elements of Centris in Quezon City.

Lucero’s commitment comes on the heels of an impressive campaign where he averaged 18.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game—numbers that solidified his status as a cornerstone for Magnolia moving forward. He is expected to play a central role in Tenorio’s revamped offensive system.
The Filipino-American forward also shared that loyalty to the franchise and a desire to win a PBA title were major factors in his decision to stay.
“I want to bring a championship. I have unfinished business,” Lucero added.
The Hotshots made significant moves in the offseason, most notably parting ways with long-time head coach Chito Victolero, who had been at the helm since 2016. Taking his place is LA Tenorio, a six-time PBA champion known for his basketball IQ and leadership as a player.
Tenorio’s transition to coaching signals a shift in direction for Magnolia, and Lucero’s extension underscores the franchise’s commitment to building around young, high-upside talent.
In addition to the coaching change, the Hotshots also closed the chapter on another long-standing relationship, releasing veteran big man Rafi Reavis after a remarkable 15-year run with the franchise. Reavis, 48, had been one of the league’s oldest active players.
Magnolia’s offseason overhaul extended beyond the court. In the front office, Jayson Webb was appointed as the team’s new governor, while Kirk Collier joined the coaching staff as an assistant after a previous stint with Barangay Ginebra.
On the player personnel side, the Hotshots made the following moves:
- Re-signed: Peter Alfaro, Russel Escoto, and Joseph Eriobu
- Acquired: Veteran guard Paolo Taha via free agency
Lucero, currently continuing his offseason training and recovery in the United States, is expected to return fully ready for the grind of PBA Season 50.
