“I don’t want to be humble”: Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t agree that Lionel Messi is the GOAT

The Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo debate — arguably the most enduring discussion in football history — has resurfaced after the Al-Nassr superstar addressed the topic in a recent interview with Piers Morgan.

For nearly two decades, Messi and Ronaldo have dominated world football, sharing an astonishing 13 Ballon d’Or awards between them and rewriting the sport’s record books during their glittering careers at Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively.

While fans and pundits continue to argue over who is the Greatest of All Time (GOAT), both players have traditionally refrained from publicly criticizing one another. However, in a teaser clip from Morgan’s latest interview, Ronaldo finally gave his candid thoughts when asked about the comparison.

When Morgan posed the question, “People say Messi is better than you — what do you think?”, Ronaldo replied without hesitation:

“Messi better than me? I don’t agree with that opinion. I don’t want to be humble.”

The 40-year-old forward also responded to past remarks from his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney, who has previously stated his preference for Messi.

“They are two different players,” Rooney said at the time. “But I think Messi’s incredible — I think he is the best ever. Ronaldo has been a bit unlucky because in any other era, he would be winning all the awards Messi has. They are two of the best players of all time.”

Ronaldo brushed off the comments, saying simply:

“It doesn’t pose any problem for me.”

Despite being in the twilight of his career, Ronaldo continues to deliver at the highest level. Since joining Al-Nassr, he has scored 82 goals in 84 appearances and remains on track to become the first footballer in history to reach 1,000 career goals. The Portugal captain has also expressed his desire to represent his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As both Messi and Ronaldo approach the final chapters of their legendary careers, the GOAT debate remains as fierce as ever — with no definitive answer in sight.
