Hidilyn Diaz roaring for another gold medal in SEA Games return

Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo is set to make a much-anticipated return to the biennial regional meet as she leads the Philippine weightlifting squad at the upcoming 2025 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Thailand this December.

The Olympic champion, the first Filipino to clinch gold at the Olympic Games, will compete in the women’s 58 kg division, marking her comeback since her last SEA Games appearance in 2022.

Her return comes after she skipped the 2023 edition in Cambodia to concentrate on other international duties.

Despite recent setbacks, including missing out on qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Diaz remains determined. In a statement, she pledged to bring her trademark strength and discipline to the SEA Games stage, vowing to “give her best” for the country.

At age 34, the veteran lifter is aware that the road ahead will not be easy. Analysts note she has never won a medal beyond the 55 kg class at the senior level, which makes her 58 kg bid a formidable challenge.

Still, many view her return not just as a powerful signal that she remains committed to leading and inspiring younger weightlifters in the country.

Joining Diaz on the national roster are a mix of experienced names and rising talent, among them are Elreen Ando (63 kg), Rosegie Ramos (48 kg), Jhodie Peralta (53 kg), and Kristel Macrohon (69 kg), along with several male lifters.
