The Akari Chargers have significantly strengthened their squad for the ongoing Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason tournament by signing versatile setter Mars Alba, just a week after her exit from the Choco Mucho Flying Titans.
The Chargers management announced Alba’s signing on Wednesday, July 9, across their various social media platforms, welcoming the Alas Pilipinas star with the message: “Setting the tone. Bring the vibes. Let’s give it up for the newest spark in the Akari fam, Mars Alba.”
Alba, who recently parted ways with Choco Mucho after playing a total of three conferences for the franchise, joins Akari at a crucial time following the unexpected retirement of team captain Mich Cobb. Cobb stepped away from playing at just 26 years old to take on dual roles as team executive and playmaking coach.
“Chargers fam, I can’t wait to see you, and I hope you support me with the Akari Chargers. See you soon!” Alba said in a short video message dressed in Akari colors.
The 25-year-old is expected to immediately join the team’s leadership core, alternating with fellow setter Kamille Cal. Reports indicate she has signed a multiyear contract with the franchise. Alba will also reunite with her former La Salle and Alas Pilipinas teammates Justine Jazareno and Fifi Sharma, with whom she won the UAAP Season 85 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
Alba brings both experience and talent, having been named Finals Most Valuable Player in UAAP Season 85 and playing a key role in Choco Mucho’s runner-up finish to the Creamline Cool Smashers in last year’s All-Filipino Conference.
However, Akari will have to wait for her debut, as she is expected to miss part of the ongoing PVL On Tour due to her commitments with the national team, Alas Pilipinas.
The Chargers have struggled in the PVL On Tour, winning just one and losing three of their first four games. They currently sit fifth in the Pool B standings. Their next match is scheduled against the Capital1 Solar Spikers on Tuesday, July 15, at the FilOil EcoOil Arena.
