Fran Yu’s fiery fourth sparks Titan Ultra revival;  Anton Asistio, Gian Mamuyac power Rain or Shine to solo lead

Fran Yu lit up the fourth quarter like a man on a mission, steering Titan Ultra to a 97-86 win over Blackwater and finally snapping their four-game skid in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Yu’s fearless playmaking and timely marksmanship turned the tide. The streaky guard dropped 10 of his 14 points in the final frame, including a rare four-point play that triggered a decisive 10-3 rally for an 81-70 cushion midway through the quarter.

When the Bossing threatened late, Yu calmly buried another triple that crushed their hopes, setting up Calvin Abueva and Joshua Munzon to seal the deal for Titan Ultra’s long-awaited second win.

Abueva continued his monster run with his third straight double-double—23 points and 14 rebounds—while Munzon added 18 as the Giant Risers improved to 2-4 in the standings.

Aljun Melecio (11) and Von Pessumal (10) also stepped up in a crucial second-half turnaround that erased a five-point halftime deficit.

The victory was built on suffocating defense as Titan Ultra contained Blackwater’s lead guns. Sedrick Barefield scored 18 but was limited to 6-of-14 shooting, while Christian David struggled at 6-of-20 for 15 points.

Troy Mallilin (17) and Dalph Panopio (15, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks) fought hard, but the Bossing fell to 1-5—losing their fourth straight.

In the nightcap, Rain or Shine continued its scorching form, outlasting Phoenix, 91-80, to seize solo first place with a 5-1 record.

Anton Asistio drilled six triples en route to 20 points, including eight in the payoff period to break open what had been a deadlocked battle. His long bomb capped a 13-0 blast that swung the Elasto Painters from a 67-71 deficit to an 80-71 lead in the third.

“We are getting used to finding ways to win but I would rather win ‘yung medyo maluwag luwag, hindi ‘yung masyadong nahihirapan,” said head coach Yeng Guiao, recalling their narrow escape against Titan Ultra in their previous game.

Gian Mamuyac carried the early load, erupting for 22 points—including 14 in the third quarter—to keep Rain or Shine’s offense humming. The Elasto Painters, however, suffered a scare when Keith Datu exited with a knee injury after a bad fall. He was later taken to the hospital for an MRI.

Phoenix’s Jason Perkins finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Bryan Santos and Kai Ballungay combined for 21 boards, but it wasn’t enough to prevent their fourth straight loss, dropping them to 1-5.
