Former National Basketball Association (NBA) star Gilbert Arenas has found himself in major controversy after being arrested and charged with hosting illegal poker games in a luxury home he owned between September 2021 and July 2022.

Arenas was charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating an illegal gambling business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators, according to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, in the early hours of Thursday, July 31 (Philippine Standard Time).

In addition to Arenas, five other defendants have also been charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business and one count of operating an illegal gambling business.

According to the statement, the games were said to include the hiring of young women who served drinks, provided massages, and offered companionship to the poker players. If convicted, Arenas could face a maximum 15-year prison sentence.

The 43-year-old appeared in court in Los Angeles, where he was released on a $50,000 bond after pleading not guilty to all charges. His trial is scheduled for September 23.

“At this point in the case, he is presumed innocent, right? He has the same right as any other citizen to that presumption, and that’s how he should be treated,” Arenas’ attorney Jerome Friedberg told the media.

Selected as the 31st overall pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 2001 NBA Draft, Arenas spent more than a decade in the league, also playing for the Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, and Memphis Grizzlies. However, it was with the Wizards that he enjoyed his best run, spending around seven seasons with them, becoming a key player and earning three NBA All-Star selections from 2005 to 2007.

Arenas finished with career averages of 20.7 points and 5.3 assists per game, and also had a stint in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) before eventually becoming a popular podcaster with his show, “Gil’s Arena,” which has over a million subscribers on YouTube.
