Former Gilas guard and two-time PBA All-Star Matthew Wright is set to skip the 2025-2026 Japan B.League Season to take care of his mother in Tarlac.

While in the country, Wright expressed interest in a possible return to the PBA with the Phoenix Fuelmasters, where he last played in 2022.

“It’s possible I’m returning to the PBA,” he said.

A return is not definite, however, as his mom, Ofelia Augustin, is currently sick in Tarlac. Wright stated that he is also holding off on any interest from other teams while taking care of his mother.

Phoenix can sign Wright to a contract anytime if both parties agree. Once signed, the guard can be eligible to play for the Fuelmasters in the league’s 50th season.

Wright can also suit up for Gilas Pilipinas in the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this December as a replacement for Kevin Quiambao, who was ruled ineligible due to his commitments to his Korean Basketball League (KBL) team.

The 34-year-old averaged 10.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game as one of the star players for the Kawasaki Brave Thunders last season

The Filipino-Canadian last tallied 15.3 points, 5.9 assists, and 5.1 rebounds for Phoenix in the 2022-2023 season, including a stellar farewell game before going to Japan when he recorded 15 markers, eight boards, and four assists in a 89-66 rout of Converge.
