Five-time NBA All-Star John Wall has officially announced his retirement from basketball after an 11-season career that saw him become one of the league’s most dynamic guards and a well-respected figure both on and off the court.

Wall made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), expressing gratitude to those who supported him throughout his career.

“Today, I’m stepping off of the court, but not away from the game. Basketball will always be in my life, and new opportunities present themselves. I feel now is the time to walk confidently into my next chapter,” Wall wrote.

The Washington Wizards selected Wall with the first overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, and he immediately impressed by averaging 16.4 points per game as a rookie, finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting. He spent 10 seasons with the Wizards, where he earned his first All-Star nod in the 2013–14 season after averaging 19.3 points and 8.8 assists. That marked the beginning of five consecutive All-Star selections.

At his peak, Wall was among the league’s premier point guards, renowned for his blazing speed, elite playmaking, and court vision. His best season came in 2016–17, when he averaged 23.1 points, 10.7 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. That year, he earned All-NBA Third Team honors, was selected as an All-Star, and even entered MVP discussions. He also claimed the 2014 NBA Slam Dunk Contest title.

Injuries, however, derailed much of Wall’s prime. Despite that, he carved out a decorated career that also included stints with the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. Over 11 seasons, he compiled career averages of 18.7 points and 8.9 assists per game.

Wall last played for the Clippers on January 13, 2023, posting 11.4 points and 5.2 assists in 22.2 minutes per game that season. Though he previously expressed interest in making an NBA comeback, the 34-year-old ultimately decided to step away from the game to focus on business ventures and philanthropy.
