Philippine gymnastics icon Carlos Yulo made a triumphant return to the mat in his first international competition since making history for the Philippines at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.
Yulo marked his comeback by winning the men’s individual all-around bronze medal at the 2025 Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships on Thursday, June 5, in Jecheon, South Korea. His performance also earned Team Philippines its first medal of the competition.
The 25-year-old tallied a total of 83.633 points across six apparatuses, finishing third overall behind reigning Olympic all-around champion Oka Shinnosuke (85.134 points) and fellow Japanese teammate Hasegawa Tsuyoshi (83.967 points).
Notably, Yulo topped both the floor exercise and vault events—the two disciplines in which he won his Olympic gold medals. He posted his highest scores in the floor exercise (14.433 points) and in the vault (14.500 average), advancing to the finals in both events. The Filipino star also qualified for the finals in parallel bars (14.167 points, 4th), still rings (13.633 points, 7th), and horizontal bar (13.800 points, 10th). His lowest score came in the pommel horse at 13.100 points.
It’s worth noting that Yulo advanced to the horizontal bar finals despite finishing outside the top eight, thanks to the two-per-country rule that limits the number of finalists per nation.
While Yulo fell short of replicating his individual all-around gold from the previous edition of the championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, winning bronze is a significant feat—especially considering this was his first international appearance after a 10-month break following his Olympic campaign.
The gymnastics superstar will next compete in the floor exercise and rings finals on Saturday, June 7. He will then take part in the vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar finals on Sunday, June 8.
