Mark Magsayo is widely considered one of the best boxers to come from the Philippines, holding an impressive professional boxing record and a former World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight championship title.
Magsayo joins fellow Filipino boxing star Eumir Marcial on the historic Manny Pacquiao vs. Mario Barrios fight card on July 19, where he will face Mexican star Jorge Mata Cuellar at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout will be a 10-round fight promoted by Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), with the two fighters competing for the vacant WBC Continental Americas super featherweight title.
Manny Pacquiao MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons officially confirmed Magsayo’s inclusion on the highly anticipated card.
“It’s a great opportunity to fight for the second time on the undercard of my childhood hero Manny Pacquiao, who is the main reason I started boxing. Just like the first time I fought under his card in the featherweight class, this is another stepping stone toward a world title in my second division, super featherweight. I’m grateful for the opportunity from big brother Manny,” Magsayo said in a media interaction.
“I would like to thank Sir Manny Pacquiao and Sean Gibbons, who has taken care of my career and made me a world champion. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, Sir Al Haymon of TGB, Tom Brown of TGB Promotions, and Louie Decubas of PBC as well,” he added.
This isn’t the first time Magsayo has fought on a Pacquiao undercard. The first instance came on August 21, 2021, during Pacquiao’s last professional fight against Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugas.
The 29-year-old is currently training with his idol Pacquiao in the United States and remains confident about putting on a good show, especially as he enters the fight on a three-fight win streak. His most recent victory came against Ecuadorian Bryan Mercado, whom he knocked out in the second round in Long Beach, California, on December 14, 2024.
“Training alongside my idol makes me happy. Seeing him every day still inspires me, just as it did when I was a kid. He spends time with us, his boxers, and teaches us. I’m very excited to fight on July 19 and hope to see everyone in town for this thrilling Philippines vs. Mexico showdown,” Magsayo concluded.
The Filipino superstar holds a 27–2 win-loss record with 18 knockouts, while Cuellar enters the fight with a 21–2–2 record and 13 knockouts.
