Filipino-American Alyssa Thompson joins Chelsea Women for potential record fee

Filipina-American Alyssa Thompson has signed with Chelsea Women for around a sum of £1.1 million, with add-ons that could reach around a world-record sum.

Thompson plays for the United States National Women’s Team but has Filipino — alongside African-American and Peruvian — heritage. Her maternal grandparents originated from Peru, while her paternal grandparents have a mix of African-American and Filipino ancestry.

“Chelsea is such an amazing club, one of the best in the world. Being able to play with players that are the best in the world is an amazing opportunity at such a young age, and I want to learn, grow, and develop a lot. I feel like Chelsea is such an amazing environment to do that in,” Thompson said in an interview with Chelsea FC’s website.

As a high-schooler, she was hailed as the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a sophomore after tallying 48 goals in 17 games. She then went on to become the youngest player to play for the USWNT and has 22 caps under her belt.

The 20-year-old forward became the youngest player to be drafted into the National Women’s Soccer League, and the first player to enter the league from high school when she was picked No. 1 overall by Angel City in 2023.

She leaves Angel City with 15 goals in 63 appearances and with the pressures of helping the Blues capture their first UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy alongside veteran defenders Millie Bright and Lucy Bronze, midfielder Sjoeke Nüsken, and star Lauren James.
