Filipina5 trio to make history with appearances in two FIFA World Cups

Three members of the Philippine women’s national football team are set to make history as the first Filipino athletes to compete in two different FIFA World Cups.

Katrina Guillou, Isabella Flanigan, and Jaclyn Sawicki, who represented the Philippines in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, will also suit up for the national futsal team in the 2025 FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup to be held in Manila.

Representing the country in a FIFA World Cup is already considered a rare milestone.
Doing it twice — and in two different formats — places the trio in an elite category of athletes worldwide.

Sawicki, Guillou, and Flanigan were part of the Filipinas squad that made the nation’s World Cup debut in 2023, highlighted by the team’s historic 1–0 victory over co-host New Zealand in Wellington. Their participation marked one of the biggest achievements in Philippine football.

Two years later, the three are transitioning to futsal, a faster, smaller-sided version of the sport that demands quicker touches and rapid decision-making.

Their inclusion is expected to strengthen a Philippine futsal program still building experience at the international level.

Sawicki, the Filipinas’ midfield anchor in the 2023 World Cup, played every match during the tournament and now brings leadership to the futsal team.

Guillou, who contributed in the attack during the 2023 campaign, has already seen futsal action after appearing in the qualifiers. Flanigan, the youngest of the group, joins her first futsal World Cup cycle and adds energy and versatility to the squad.

Beyond their on-court roles, the three players also provide a visibility boost for futsal in the Philippines as the country prepares to host the 2025 World Cup. Their presence gives the team athletes who have previously competed on football’s biggest stage.

Sawicki, Guillou, and Flanigan will now aim to make history once more — this time in front of a home crowd.
