EuroBasket: Germany outlasts Turkey as Dennis Schroder delivers late heroics in finale

Dennis Schroder once again cemented himself as one of the best players to come out of Germany as he led his country to the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket crown with an 88-83 win over Turkey in Riga.

The Sacramento Kings guard finished with a double-double of 16 points and 12 assists, delivering the final six points of the game. He nailed a jumper with 18.7 seconds left, and after Turkey’s Alperen Sengun missed a potential game-tying three, Schroder sealed the victory with two clutch free throws.

With the performance he was awarded the Tissot 2025 FIBA EuroBasket MVP and a spot in the tournament’s All-Star Five.

“We never shy away from the big moments. … Everybody is so confident,” said Schroder. “Just big-time plays from big-time character people.”

Isaac Bonga top-scored for Germany with 20 points, while Franz Wagner chipped in 18 in the tightly fought finale. Sengun paced Turkey with a dominant 28-point performance, supported by Cedi Osman’s 23 and Shane Larkin’s 13 points, nine assists, and six rebounds.

For Schroder, the championship was more than just another medal. Earlier in the tournament, he opened up about being subjected to racist remarks during Germany’s group-stage match in Prague, something that he admitted was painful but also gave him more motivation to represent his team with pride.

He stressed that moments like these are reminders of why he continues to play with passion and responsibility for both his country and the next generation of German players.

The victory also comes two years after Schroder led Germany to its historic FIBA World Cup title in 2023, where he was named tournament MVP after averaging nearly 20 points per game. That run in Manila cemented his reputation as a big-game performer, and now, with a EuroBasket gold added to his resume, his leadership and resilience have lifted German basketball to even greater heights.

With both a World Cup and EuroBasket title under his belt, Schroder has now completed a rare international double that only a handful of European stars have ever achieved. His consistency on the global stage has not only put Germany among basketball’s elite nations but also underscored his place in the conversation of Europe’s all-time great guards.

For Germany, the win also signals the dawn of a golden generation built around Schroder, Wagner, and Bonga—one that has the potential to contend for more international hardware in the years ahead, including the Olympics. And at the heart of it all remains their fiery leader, who continues to deliver when the lights are brightest.
