Ahead of the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in December, Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial has announced that he will put his national team career on a hiatus to focus on his professional boxing career.

The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) previously expressed its interest in having Marcial compete in the SEA Games this December, but has said that it will depend on the Filipino boxer’s promoter, Sean Gibbons of MP Promotions.

Marcial admitted that his young professional career is now of the utmost importance after representing the Philippines as an amateur since 2011.

“My priority now is my professional career,” Marcial said in an online show hosted by Blow-By-Blow.

The Zamboanga native captured a gold medal in the 2015 SEA Games before winning a bronze medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Gibbons previously mapped out a plan to fast-track Marcial in the Middleweight world rankings that would culminate in a world-title fight by 2026.

Marcial is set to fight Eddy Colmenares for the World Boxing Council (WBC) International Middleweight crown in the Thrilla in Manila 2 card on Oct. 29 at the iconic Smart Araneta Coliseum.
