Eldrew Yulo finishes eighth in Junior FIG Worlds

Karl Eldrew Yulo delivered a solid performance on the global stage, finishing eighth in the men’s individual all-around final at the 3rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships on Saturday.

The 17-year-old, competing in his first all-around final in this level of international competition, totaled 78.731 points over six apparatuses.

He showed particular flair in his signature event, the floor exercise, where he scored a 14.300, ranking second among the 24 finalists at that stage.

Yulo’s campaign, however, was not without its challenges as early in the final, he surged into contention, posting 13.000 on the pommel horse, a strong showing that briefly put him near the top of the leaderboard, but setbacks on the rings (12.066) and other apparatuses prevented him from sustaining a podium push.

Despite the slip, Yulo expressed satisfaction with his result, especially considering where he started in the competition.

“Sobrang saya po kasi ‘yun nga, even though ‘di ako nakapasok sa Top 3, I still managed to get the Top 8…I’m still proud of myself because I finished the qualification in 15th place. But now, I finished eighth,” Yulo said.

Yulo also revealed that he sustained an ankle injury during his vault, which left him limping afterward.

“magbababa po ako ng isang element ng .100 … so there’s not much difference … Maglilinis na lang po ako ng routine para ma-achieve po ‘yung silver, or gold, or bronze, or kahit anong pa man ‘yan,” he added.

Yet even with the injury, Yulo found a bright spot: his performance on the floor and said his confidence remained high” despite the pain, and praised his clean execution in that rotation.

His determination paid off later in the competition: Yulo went on to win bronze in the floor exercise final, turning in a gritty performance even as he battled the lingering discomfort.

“Masakit pa rin po, but we still managed to compete with it … we still managed to get bronze … Filipino [trait]—we will fight until the very end,” said Yulo.

Looking ahead, Yulo remains optimistic. After moving up dramatically from 15th in qualification to eighth in the all-around, he’s setting his sights higher.

“Next time, I will do my very best to get into the Top 3,” he said.

With two more event finals still on his agenda, the vault and horizontal bar, Yulo has a real opportunity to build on this breakthrough and bring more honor to the Philippines on the world junior stage.
