Eldrew Yulo advances to four finals in FIG Juniors’ Worlds

The future of Philippine gymnastics took center stage this week as Eldrew Yulo delivered a breakout performance at the 3rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships, securing four finals berths in front of an energized home crowd at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

At just 17 years old, Eldrew proved he’s no longer just“the younger brother of Carlos Yulo after showcasing his own skill in the biggest competition of his junior career.

Yulo put together one of his most complete outings yet in the all-around qualification phase, tallying 78.332 points to finish comfortably inside the top 24.

That score assured him of a spot in Saturday’s all-around final, a stage where he’ll be going up against the world’s best young gymnasts.

But it was in the apparatus events where Eldrew truly made his mark. His routine on the floor exercise drew some of the biggest cheers of the day after a mix of clean landings that earned him 14.233 points, good enough for second place heading into the medal round.

On vault, he kept the momentum going with a 13.750, placing fifth and showing the explosiveness that has long been a trademark of the Yulo brothers. 

The most pleasant surprise came on the horizontal bar, where Eldrew nabbed the sixth spot with a score of 13.700, despite being typically known more for his power events.

Adding to the emotional atmosphere was the presence of Carlos Yulo, the country’s most decorated gymnast and a sporting icon. 

The Olympic champion watched from the stands as his younger brother delivered routine after routine en route to four finals appearances.

With his performance, Eldrew now has an action-packed weekend ahead, starting on Saturday with the All-Around final and continuing on Sunday with the Floor Exercise final. 

On Monday, he will compete in two finals: the Vault final and the Horizontal Bar final.
