Gilas Pilipinas guard Dwight Ramos had little time to dwell on the team’s quarterfinal exit following their 84-60 loss to Australia at the King Abdullah Sports City last Wednesday.
Rather than focusing on the disappointment, the starting two-guard for the Philippines has already turned his attention to what’s ahead before the team departs Jeddah.
“It’ll come in time. We’re just trying to get comfortable with each other and the system and we’ll see them again in February,” said Ramos after their defeat to the Boomers on Wednesday night. “I think, for the whole tournament we struggled shooting the three but when we get back together again in November, we’ll switch things up and address our defense.”
The 26-year-old Ramos, who posted 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss, is already mapping out the next steps in his national team journey.
The Nationals will part ways after the Asia Cup but are scheduled to reunite in early November for the first window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, where they will face Guam twice.
The second window, set for late February to early March, will have Gilas squaring off against Oceania heavyweights New Zealand—who handed them a defeat in the group stage—and, fittingly, Australia once more.
Ramos is determined to earn a measure of redemption against those teams. Known for his relentless drive to improve, the Levanga Hokkaido guard and former Ateneo standout embraces every setback as a learning opportunity.
“After every game I always think about my mistakes. I want to learn and get better,” said Ramos. “I was hoping we could get this game and get to the semis.”
Before being eliminated by the Boomers in the quarterfinal, Ramos had been one of Gilas’ most consistent performers, averaging 17.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
His scoring average ranked 12th in the entire tournament and was second only to Justin Brownlee among all Filipino players—further cementing his role as a key figure in the national squad’s future campaigns.
