Draymond Green gives his take on LeBron vs. MJ GOAT debate

Throughout the years, two names have dominated the debate on who the greatest of all time is in the NBA: LeBron James and Michael Jordan.

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green shared his thoughts on the debate in a recent stream with famous Twitch streamer Kai Cenat, picking his former rival over the former Chicago Bulls star.

Green explained his answer, citing James’ ability to carry worse teammates in the playoffs than Jordan –  while also sneakily insulting former Cleveland Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavadova.

“LeBron (is the GOAT). The reason why is because… People threw the towel in on J.R. Smith. As talented as J.R. was… ‘He can’t play winning basketball, he can’t do this, can’t do that.’ I don’t think MJ had as many guys who went through that,” Green said.

“[Matthew Dellavedova] stinks. He’ll win with guys like that. To win with guys like that? MJ wasn’t winning with Matthew Dellavedova,” added Green

James won his first two championships with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013, forming the original “Big Three” with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, alongside teammates such as Ray Allen, Shane Battier, Mario Chalmers, and Mike Miller.

The forward captured his third ring in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, once again after forming a triplet with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. Dellavadova and Smith were among the role players, alongside Richard Jefferson, Iman Shumpert, and Tristan Thompson, on that 2016 team that came back from a 3-1 series lead to defeat Green’s Warriors.

The current Lakers star notched his fourth title in the 2020 NBA bubble alongside All-NBA big man Anthony Davis, Rajon Rondo, and Kyle Kuzma.

“Steve Kerr’s probably one of Jordan’s worst teammates, and Steve Kerr was a damn good NBA player who played for 14 years,” Green said. “Jordan ain’t have those types of teammates.”

Jordan and the Bulls reigned in the 90s with six championships. With Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen spearheading alongside Jordan, and a supporting cast that consisted of Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman, Toni Kukoc, and Green’s head coach Kerr.

The take from Green does not seem too far-fetched considering he played against and is a close friend of James, but it is also worth noting that in 2022, the former Defensive Player of the Year stressed in his podcast that both James and Jordan should be considered the GOATS, and that it didn’t make sense to pit the both of them because they played in two different generations.

“What I don’t like to get into is, ‘Oh, is LeBron the GOAT over Michael Jordan?’ No, LeBron is a GOAT, and Michael Jordan’s a GOAT, and they’re both incredible, and they never played against each other…But yet we get in sports, and we get in basketball, and it gotta be LeBron James against Michael Jordan as the GOAT and who’s the best. They’re both GOATs,” he said.
