The Los Angeles Lakers made one of the biggest blockbuster trades in recent memory when they acquired star guard Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks—a move that shocked the basketball community across the world.
The Mavericks sent Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick from Los Angeles. The Utah Jazz also facilitated the deal, acquiring Jalen Hood-Schifino, a 2025 second-round pick via the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Mavericks’ 2025 second-round pick.
Dončić’s arrival rejuvenated the Lakers’ 2024–25 National Basketball Association (NBA) campaign, with the Slovenian almost single-handedly helping his new team climb up the Western Conference standings. They eventually finished the regular season in third place with a 50–32 win-loss record.
However, Dončić’s much-anticipated partnership with Lakers icon LeBron James did not end as the franchise had hoped, as they were knocked out in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Slovenian’s agent Lara Beth Seager was central to his trade to Los Angeles and in a recent interaction with ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne revealed that he holds a lot of respect for James, both on and off the court.
“The Lakers leadership team has been incredibly welcoming and supportive of Luka since we arrived in Los Angeles. We have spent a lot of time talking and getting to know each other over the last few months, and we have formed a strong working relationship. Championships are won when you work together. We all share that same goal,” Seager said.
“Luka loves playing with LeBron and has learned so much from him. He has nothing but the utmost respect for LeBron and considers it an honor to be his teammate,” she added.
The respect is mutual as James in the past has consistently stated that he has long been an admirer of Dončić, even before the trade. There is no doubt that Doncic is a once-in-a-generation talent and a player around whom the Lakers will build their roster for the next decade.
The 26-year-old has a host of individual honors to his name so far but is yet to win the NBA championship, something which he will aim to do with the Lakers before James decides to say farewell to the sport.
