Don Trollano repays trust with key role in San Miguel’s PBA title win

The San Miguel Beermen came out on top in Game 6 against the TNT Tropang Giga, 107–96, at the Philsports Arena on Friday, July 25, to win the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup.

The Beermen, one of the powerhouses of the PBA, displayed their dominance once again by capturing their seventh Philippine Cup title in the last 10 editions of the tournament.

A large part of the credit goes to an unheralded member of San Miguel’s roster, Don Trollano, who stepped up when called upon by head coach Leo Austria. Trollano, who usually comes off the bench, played a key role for the Beermen throughout the six-game Finals series and the entirety of the playoffs.

The veteran forward revealed after the game that he was honored to repay the trust Austria placed in him after the head coach informed him that he would receive more playing time this time around.

“Even before the start of the playoffs, Coach Leo Austria already talked to me. He told me that he would be giving me more minutes, so that kind of trust gave me more confidence as a player. I just gave my best and 100% always,” Trollano said.

Trollano saved his best for when it mattered most, recording 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists in Game 6 after coming off the bench and playing 20 minutes. Notably, Austria is familiar with Trollano’s abilities, having coached him at Adamson University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

“It definitely got bigger. Maybe he saw how I work on my game every day, so his trust in me kept on improving until we got here,” he added.

Traded to San Miguel from the NLEX Road Warriors on December 11, 2023, in a three-team deal also involving the NorthPort Batang Pier, Trollano has established himself as a valuable rotation player for the franchise. This is his second PBA title with San Miguel, having also won the 2023–24 Commissioner’s Cup — and his third overall.
