Creamline coach Sherwin Meneses brushes off their uncharacteristic struggles in the PVL On Tour

The Creamline Cool Smashers are undoubtedly the most successful and most popular team in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), but they have had a disappointing run—by their high standards—in the ongoing PVL On Tour.

The Cool Smashers lost back-to-back games in the preliminary round of a PVL tournament for the first time in eight years, which came as a major surprise to both fans and volleyball pundits. Creamline suffered consecutive defeats in the PVL On Tour after being swept by the Cignal HD Spikers and outlasted by the ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles in five sets in Passi City.

However, Creamline ended the two-game skid by defeating the Chery Tiggo Crossovers, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 25-18, at the City of Passi Arena on Sunday, July 20. The surprising run of defeats is not a major concern for Cool Smashers head coach Sherwin Meneses, who believes the losses stemmed from fundamental errors made by the players.

“Sa tingin ko, ‘yung lapses talaga last time—napaka-careless ng mga galaw namin. Mga basic errors, nag-e-error kami. Sa ngayon, mataas ‘yung pinerform ng team at naging maganda ‘yung panalo dahil ‘yung composure nandiyan,” Meneses said during a media interaction.

Meneses, who recently celebrated his 43rd birthday with the team in Iloilo, emphasized that the early losses are not a big deal.

“Napaka-importante ng panalo ngayon kasi ‘yung standings, dikit-dikit. Hindi naman sa amin importante kung ‘yung two games namin ay natalo. Ang importante, natuto kami kung bakit kami natatalo,” he added.

Despite the unexpected losses, Creamline remain in second place in the Pool B standings with a 3-2 win-loss record, and have all but secured qualification for the knockout rounds of the preseason tournament.
