Former Gilas Pilipinas Youth standout and UP Fighting Maroons star Juan Gomez de Liaño made an emphatic entrance into the PBA, justifying his status as the second overall pick in the 2025 PBA Rookie Draft. Selected by the Converge FiberXers on September 7 at the Mall of Asia Music Hall, the 25-year-old guard wasted no time proving his worth.

In his PBA debut on Saturday, October 11, De Liaño delivered a stunning triple-double performance, tallying points, rebounds, and assists in a dominant 129–92 victory over the Titan Ultra Giants in the Philippine Cup opener.

With the performance, De Liaño etched his name into the PBA record books as the first rookie to register a triple-double on debut since Scottie Thompson achieved the feat for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in 2016.

His impressive outing earned him the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week honors for the period of October 5–12, becoming the first recipient of the award this season. He edged out fellow contenders Zavier Lucero (Magnolia Hotshots), Caelan Tiongson (Rain or Shine Elasto Painters), and Justin Arana, his Converge teammate.

In the post-game press conference, De Liaño remained humble, crediting his teammates and coaching staff for the team’s strong start.

“I was informed I needed a couple more rebounds and assists to complete the triple-double, so I asked the coaches if I could keep playing—and I’m glad they allowed me,” he shared. “It’s not a bad way to start my PBA career.”

“It was a total team effort,” he added. “Props to our coaching staff and players. We executed our game plan well and really emphasized defense against Titan. I’m just happy we got the W.”

Known for his versatility and international experience, De Liaño now sets his sights on continuing his strong form as Converge prepares to face TNT Tropang Giga in their second Philippine Cup matchup on Saturday, October 18, at the Chavit Coliseum.
