Converge management still in the dark about when Mikey Williams will make his FiberXers debut

The TNT Tropang Giga and the Converge FiberXers were involved in a blockbuster trade recently, swapping star guard Jordan Heading for Mikey Williams—one of the biggest trades in recent Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) history.

TNT has already benefitted from the deal, as Jordan Heading made his debut for his new team during their clash against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel on Sunday, June 8. However, the Converge management has yet to hear from their new acquisition, Mikey Williams.

Converge concluded their Philippine Cup elimination stage on Wednesday, June 11, by defeating the San Miguel Beermen, 100–97, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. With the playoffs set to begin soon, the FiberXers’ management remains uncertain about when Williams will suit up.

Converge head coach Franco Atienza admitted in a media interaction that he has not received any update from upper management regarding Williams’ playing status.

“I think we reached out, but I just don’t know. It’s all on the upper management now. Wala pa ring word sa akin. I’m still waiting to see if we’re going to meet him for the playoffs or not, but I still have no word about it,” Atienza stated.

Atienza added that he is unsure whether the 33-year-old is currently in the country or abroad, considering that Williams is a dual national and often stays in the United States.

“I can’t just speculate. I can’t be sure if he is still abroad or here, but I would suppose he is abroad,” he said.

Notably, Converge has performed well even without Williams, finishing the elimination stage with a 7–4 win-loss record to place fifth in the Philippine Cup standings. It will be intriguing to see whether Williams joins the FiberXers in time for the playoffs, especially after their quarterfinal exit at the hands of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the previous Commissioner’s Cup.

Williams would no doubt be a valuable addition for Converge as they aim to challenge for the Philippine Cup championship, given that he is a two-time PBA champion and two-time PBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP).
