Converge in no rush to sign Dave Ildefonso

The Converge Fiberxers may have finally secured the signing rights of Dave Ildefonso but will have to wait until the former Ateneo star finishes his duties in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).

Ildefonso, considered by many as the missing piece to Converge’s championship aspirations, is currently in the midst of a playoff push with the Abra Solid North Weavers in the MPBL.

Head coach Delta Pineda said they intend to respect Ildefonso’s contract with Abra and are willing to wait until the end of the MPBL season.

“I need to respect his decision,” Pineda said. “Once he finishes his contract with Abra, his rights belong to us.”

Pineda is confident that Ildefonso will eventually play in the PBA due to its prestige and quality of play.

“Siguro naman, Dave wants to experience the biggest, toughest league in the country, so for sure pupunta talaga siya sa PBA,” he added.

Converge traded away rookie Kobe Monje and two future first-round picks for the former KBL star after lengthy negotiations that saw the PBA reject Converge’s initial offer of Monje and only one first-rounder.

Pineda asserted that acquiring one of the most sought-after players in the country is a “long-term” move for the three-year-old franchise and said that Ildefonso may not play for the team in the ongoing Philippine Cup or the Commissioner’s Cup.

“What happened with Dave is part of our long-term plans. We’re preparing for the future, but there’s no assurance yet because he still has a contract,” he said.

“We just want to stay one or two steps ahead, that’s why we made this move. But there’s no guarantee he’ll play for us this conference or the next,” Pineda added.

The Fiberxers currently boast a win-loss record of 3-1 in the Philippine Cup, led by star rookie Juan Gomez de Liano, big man Justin Arana, Justine Baltazar, and Alec Stockton.
