The National Basketball Association (NBA) “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT) debate continues to rage on among fans, pundits, and even the players themselves, with the choice typically coming down to two icons of the sport.
Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan and Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James are widely recognized as the two greatest players in NBA history, each with their own group of fans and supporters who hail them as the GOAT.
FS1’s Colin Cowherd recently weighed in on the GOAT debate with a critical take on LeBron, claiming that the 40-year-old knows he will never surpass Jordan in any aspect—whether in on-court achievements, popularity, or wealth.
“I think Michael Jordan is still in his head. He knows in the basketball community—with basketball fans—he’s never going to catch MJ. MJ is six-for-six. MJ is more memorable. MJ’s got the logo, the brand, and sells more shoes. He’s more romanticized. Michael Jordan—there are a dozen plays, to this day, that you can close your eyes and remember. You can see Michael Jordan doing them. Do it, unless you’re driving.
With LeBron, there’s one—that chase-down block against the Golden State Warriors. That’s it,” Cowherd said on The Herd.
“At this point, he’s never going to catch him. He’s never going to catch him in net worth. MJ’s net worth is $3.5 billion. LeBron, even with the massive money he’s made, is at $1 billion. That’s why he wants to own a basketball team. I think he’s chasing Michael, and here’s the difference—Michael Jordan makes you feel something, and LeBron doesn’t,” he added.
Cowherd does have a point, considering that despite retiring from the NBA more than two decades ago, Jordan is still widely recognized as the face of the league and remains hugely popular around the world.
However, one cannot discount LeBron, who has been in the spotlight since 2003 and has served as the face of the NBA since his debut. Now 40 years old, he is nearing the end of his professional career and is still chasing a fifth NBA championship.
This remains an interesting take on the GOAT debate, although it’s clear that both players will go down in the annals of basketball history and remain iconic long after they’ve left the game.
