Clo Mondonedo and Alyssa Eroa confident of a bright future after ZUS Coffee’s breakthrough PVL campaign

The ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles capped off a breakthrough campaign in the recently concluded Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference, reaching the Finals for the first time in franchise history.

Their historic run, however, ended in heartbreak on Sunday, November 30, as they fell to the Petro Gazz Angels, 25-15, 26-28, 23-25, 20-25, in the championship match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Despite the loss, Best Setter awardee Clo Mondonedo and veteran libero Alyssa Eroa remain upbeat about the Thunderbelles’ future, confident that the team will only grow stronger from the experience.

“I’m just so proud of how our team has reached this far. The process wasn’t easy, but then they gave their best and heart every game. Not the ending we wanted but I can say we deserve the spot because we put so much effort for the team and the sport. All I can say is I’m so proud and grateful for this team. A lot of learning, experience, and motivation going to the next conference,” Mondonedo said.

“To be honest, I can’t explain how motivated I am right now. It’s such a great season, and we didn’t expect much, and it feels great to experience those moments. Personally, this experience made me even more hungry to do more, achieve more, and do my job even better to help my team. I think we need to be more composed, more determined, disciplined, and mature to get that championship. I know this team is still young and still has a lot to learn. And I believe we can achieve more,” she added.

Eroa, who joined ZUS Coffee in the offseason, proved to be a stabilizing force throughout the conference. The 2017 PVL champion with the now-defunct BaliPure believes the Finals run is only the beginning for the young squad.

“It turned out to be a win-win situation, both for me moving to the team and for them choosing to get me. I won’t let them feel disappointed, not for the moment. I won’t let them regret bringing me in. I’m excited for the achievements each of us can still reach, especially since our team is still young.

“There are still many things we need to improve. But this experience is a big thing for each one of us. It feels really good, even as first-timers, for such a young team to experience that kind of pressure and level of play. That experience is such a big thing for the younger players and for the whole team,” Eroa said.

With their Finals debut setting a new standard, all eyes will be on ZUS Coffee in the next conference as they look to build on their meteoric rise and prove they are ready to contend consistently at the highest level.
