Chino Sy leads successful Judo outing for Team PH in SEA Games

The Philippine judo team capped its campaign at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games with a gold medal performance in the mixed team event, giving standout judoka Chino Sy his second gold of the tournament. 

Sy, who earlier captured gold in the men’s 100-kg individual division, was part of the squad that dominated the finals to clinch top honors in the mixed team competition. 

His teammate Esleken Kedo delivered a crucial victory over Thailand’s Kittipong Hantratin in the knockout match of the best-of-seven series, setting up the Philippines’ path to gold.

The Filipino team lineup also included Gabriel Benedict Quitain, Randy Ferrera Jr., John Viron Ferrer, Rhyan Zarchie Garay, Joemari-Heart Rafael, Leah Jhane Lopez, Khrizzie Pabulayan, Margaret Fajardo, and Maxine Denise Mababangloob, all of whom contributed to the historic triumph. 

The mixed team victory marked a high point for Team Philippines’ judo contingent, which concluded the SEA Games with multiple medals and showcased the depth of Filipino judo talent in both individual and team formats. 

Sy’s individual success in the men’s 100kg division came after he bested Indonesia’s Gede Ganding via ippon earlier in the competition, reinforcing his status as one of the country and Asia’s top judo competitors. 

The gold medal marks Sy’s second in the SEA Games after previously reigning in the sambo event at the 2019 iteration.
