Carlos Yulo books floor, vault finals spots in Gymnastics Worlds

Filipino Olympic gold-medalist Carlos Yulo clinched spots in the finals of the vault and floor exercise events in the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Indonesia on Sunday, Oct. 19

Yulo finished on top of the vault exercise qualification round after tallying a score of 14.750, before finishing second in the floor exercise after a routine that scored 14.700.

The Filipino gymnast is settling to compete in the two events due to a wrist injury, and is not eligible to take part in the all-around event.

The 25-year-old last won the floor world title in 2019 before championing in 2021 in the vault event.

Armenia’s Artur Davtyan will be Yulo’s rival for the gold medal in the vault event after he scored 14.566, while Great Britain’s Jake Jarman will put pressure on the Filipino in the floor exercise category after he finished with the best score of 14.700 in the qualification round.

Yulo’s performances come after the Gymastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) announced that the Olympian will not suit up for the Philippines in the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this December.

The decision was made after Thailand prevented participants from competing in more than one apparatus and cancelled the team event.

On Friday, Oct. 24, Yulo will try to win the gold medal in the floor exercise before competing in the vault event on Saturday.
