The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) on Thursday, July 23, announced the appointment of Spaniard Carles Cuadrat as the new head coach of the Philippine men’s national football team.
The PFF released a statement welcoming Cuadrat to the managerial role as they aim to elevate the national team’s performance and foster sustained growth in Philippine football.
“We are pleased to welcome Coach Carles Cuadrat to lead our senior men’s national team. His deep tactical understanding, coupled with a history of building winning teams and developing players, perfectly aligns with our vision for the future. We saw a glimpse of his immediate impact during the Tajikistan match, demonstrating his ability to inspire and adapt under pressure. We are confident that under his guidance, our national team will achieve new milestones and ignite even greater passion for football across the country,” said PFF President John Gutierrez.
Cuadrat replaces Albert Capellas in the managerial hot seat after the latter stepped down as head coach of the Philippine national team in May, following a historic run to the semifinals of the 2024 ASEAN Championships.
Notably, Cuadrat is no stranger to the national team, having served as interim head coach during the Philippines’ AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Tajikistan in June. The Spaniard immediately impressed by leading the team to a 2-2 draw.
The 56-year-old learned his football under the iconic “La Masia” academy in Barcelona and has enjoyed an impressive coaching career both as a head coach and assistant. Cuadrat was head coach of Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) from 2018 to 2021, where he led the club to the ISL Championship in 2019 and the Indian Super Cup in 2018. He brings with him vast experience, having held roles across Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, El Salvador, and other countries.
Meanwhile, the PFF also appointed Miguel Gutierrez as the team manager, following his successful tenure as President of the National Capital Region Football Association (NCRFA).
The Philippine men’s national team will next be in action against Timor-Leste in October as they aim to qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
