Carl Tamayo powers Changwon LG Sakers to third straight win with dominant outings in the KBL

Carl Tamayo is starting to look more and more like the franchise cornerstone the Changwon LG Sakers envisioned when they brought him into the Korean Basketball League (KBL). Over the weekend, the Filipino forward powered the defending champions to back-to-back victories, stretching their winning streak to three games and cementing their place among the early contenders this season.

The Gilas mainstay delivered a standout performance in Changwon’s 80-74 triumph over fellow Filipino import Kevin Quiambao and the Goyang Sono Skygunners on Friday, exploding for 22 points and 11 rebounds.

It was the kind of all-around effort that showed his growing comfort in the Korean game — aggressive on both ends and reliable in crunch time.

The former UP Fighting Maroon didn’t let up two days later, turning in a steady 14-point outing alongside four rebounds and four assists as Changwon dismantled JD Cagulangan and the Suwon KT Sonicboom, 69-53, on Sunday.

With the twin victories, the Sakers climbed to 3-1, sharing the league’s top spot with KCC Egis and Wonju DB Promy, both of whom have also hit early form.

For Tamayo, this hot start is more than just numbers — it’s a sign of confidence. Once a key piece in the Philippines’ college basketball scene, he’s quickly evolving into a reliable leader in one of Asia’s toughest professional leagues.

Over in Daegu, fellow Gilas Pilipinas standout Kevin Quiambao also turned in a strong weekend showing. After falling to Tamayo’s Sakers, Quiambao and the Skygunners bounced back with an 86-80 win against Daegu KOGAS Pegasus, where he posted 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Former Ateneo guard SJ Belangel top-scored for Daegu with 22 points, but his efforts weren’t enough to prevent a fourth straight defeat.

Meanwhile, Rhenz Abando nearly willed the Anyang JKJ Red Boosters to victory with a season-high 25 points, but the Seoul Samsung Thunders managed to escape with an 83-80 win, handing Anyang their second loss of the season.

As the KBL season gains momentum, Filipino imports continue to leave their mark across the league — with Tamayo leading the charge, not just as a scorer, but as a driving force behind Changwon’s bid for back-to-back glory.
